Throughout the 1960s, the ADO16 was consistently the UK's best-selling car. Although most of the cars were manufactured in England, the model was also built in Spain by Authi, in Italy by Innocenti and at the company's own plant in Belgium. It was the basis for locally adapted similar cars manufactured in Australia and South Africa. The vehicle was launched as the Morris 1100 on August 15, 1962. The range was expanded to include several rebadged versions, including the twin-carburettor MG 1100, the Vanden Plas Princess (from October 1962), the Austin 1100 (August 1963), and finally the Wolseley 1100 (1965) and Riley Kestrel (1965). The Morris badged 1100/1300 gave up its showroom space to the Morris Marina in 1971, but Austin and Vanden Plas versions remained in production in the UK till June 1974. The estate version followed in 1966, called Countryman in the Austin version and Traveller in the Morris one, continuing the established naming scheme. In 1964 the 1100 was Wheels magazine's Car of the Year.

Ab 1965 gab es den Wagen mit eigenständigem Kühlergrill und MG-Mechanik auch als Riley Kestrel 1100 bzw. als Wolseley 1100. Er verfügte über den gleichen 4-Zylinder-Reihenmotor wie das Schwestermodell / Vorgänger: 1098 cm³ Hubraum und 48 bhp (35 kW). Das Fahrzeug besaß Frontantrieb und "Hydrolastic"-Radaufhängungen (hydraulisches Feder-Dämpfer-System). Es erreichte eine Höchstgeschwindigkeit von 125 km/h . Wie beim Mini gab es bei diesem Fließheckfahrzeug keine große Heckklappe, sondern nur eine kleine Kofferraumöffnung. Es gab auch einen 3-türigen Kombi (Estate) mit großer Heckklappe, von dem aber nur eine geringe Stückzahl in Umlauf kam. Mit kleinen Änderungen erschien 1967 der Austin 1100 Mk II und 1971 der Austin 1100 Mk III. Mit der Karosserieform der Limousine wurde auch der Austin 1300 angeboten. 1974 wurde die Produktion des Austin 1100 eingestellt. Die Produktion der Morris-, MG-, Riley- und Wolseley-Modelle war bereits 6 Jahre vorher eingestellt worden. Nachfolger war der Austin Allegro.
