The programme was originally broadcast several times a day, but disappeared from screens in 1999, when the BBC World Service adapted the programme name for their new flagship morning programme at the time of the BBC News relaunch. It returned in 2001, and was broadcast once a day as a European breakfast programme, with news, sport and a half hour edition of World Business Report. As part of the general relaunch of BBC News on April 21 2008, The World Today was rebranded as BBC World News, appearing the same as a standard bulletin to viewers of BBC World News but subtly different for viewers in the UK.
