BBC Films is at the forefront of British independent filmmaking, and co-produces around eight films a year, working in partnership with major international and UK distributors. Christine Langan is Head of BBC Films, responsible for the development and production slate, strategy and business operations. Recent titles include Nigel Cole's BAFTA-nominated Made in Dagenham, Stephen Frears’ Tamara Drewe, Debs Gardner-Paterson’s Africa United, Max and Dania’s StreetDance, which was Britain’s first-ever 3-D movie. BBC Films has an impressive back catalogue, which includes titles such as Lone Scherfig’s Academy Award®-nominated and BAFTA award-winning An Education; Armando Iannucci’s Academy Award® and BAFTA award-nominated In the Loop; Jane Campion’s Academy Award®-nominated Bright Star; and Andrea Arnold’s BAFTA award-winning Fish Tank. Up until 2007, BBC Films was based in Mortimer Street around the corner from Broadcasting House, while still under the full control of the BBC. A re-structuring of the division integrated it into the main BBC Fiction department of BBC Vision. As a result, it moved out of its independent offices into Television Centre, and its head David M. Thompson left to start his own film production company.
