- Béla Guttmann, also referred to as Guttmann Béla, was a Jewish-Hungarian footballer and coach. He played as a midfielder for MTK Hungária FC, SC Hakoah Wien, Hungary and several clubs in the United States. However he is perhaps best remembered as a coach and manager of some the world’s leading football teams, including AC Milan, São Paulo FC, FC Porto, SL Benfica and C.A. Peñarol. His greatest success came with SL Benfica when he guided them to two successive European Cup wins in 1961 and in 1962. Together with Márton Bukovi and Gusztáv Sebes, Guttmann formed a triumvirate of radical Hungarian coaches who pioneered the 4-2-4 formation and he is also credited with mentoring Eusébio. However throughout his career he was never far from controversy. Widely travelled, as both a player and coach, he rarely stayed at a club longer than two seasons, and was quoted as saying the third season is fatal. He was sacked at AC Milan while they were top of Serie A and he walked out on SL Benfica after they refused to pay him more money, leaving the club with a curse as he left. He also earned a reputation for his self confidence and his brash style, leading to comparisons with Jose Mourinho .

Treinador do Honvéd, enfrentou Puskás pela substituição de um jogador, tendo nos balneários anunciado a sua renúncia. O seu estilo ofensivo reinou nas duas décadas de 50 e 60, em vários países, clubes e em dois continentes. Depois da sua saída da Hungria, torna o Enschede holandês campeão. Assim que chega, leva o AC Milan à vitória no campeonato em 1954-55. No ano seguinte, voa em socorro do futebol uruguaio, e é campeão com o Peñarol. Em 1957, faz outra aposta, desta vez no Brasil, com o São Paulo Futebol Clube. Aqui, Béla Guttmann põe uma condição: contratar Zizinho, "Mestre Ziza", 35 anos, o jogador que encarnou o "futebol arte" no Brasil, o modelo e ídolo de Pelé), tendo-se tornado, uma vez mais, campeão. De regresso à Europa, o destino foi Portugal, primeiro no Porto, onde também foi campeão, e depois para um dos "grandes" de Lisboa, o Benfica onde se senta ao lado do técnico brasileiro do São Paulo, José Carlos Bauer, ex-jogador dos Mundiais de 50 e 54. Este conta-lhe que viu uma grande promessa em Lourenço Marques, Moçambique. Bela Guttmann manda um emissário e em dias, no final de 1960, Eusébio da Silva Ferreira chega a Lisboa. Final do Torneio de Paris, 1961. Bela Guttmann, desespera na final contra o Santos de Pelé, que vence por 3-0 ao intervalo. A 20 minutos do final, faz entrar o Pantera Negra, Eusébio, que marca três golos seguidos ante o olhar atónito do Rei Pelé. Este, raivoso, marca então dois golos na partida, vencendo o Santos o prestigioso torneio por 6-3. O Jornal France Football titula "Eusébio 3 - Pelé 2". Béla Guttmann e Eusébio, aparte de ganharem os campeonatos portugueses, fariam do Benfica indiscutivelmente uma das melhores equipas da Europa nos anos 60. Foi o apogeu e o final feliz da grande história de Béla Guttmann. Morreu aos 81 anos em 1981. Béla Guttmann dizia a Eusébio e aos seus outros jogadores: "Metamos três golos e já veremos".
