- Autocomplete is a feature provided by many web browsers, e-mail programs, source code editors, database query tools, word processors, and command line interpreters. Autocomplete involves the program predicting a word or phrase that the user wants to type in without the user actually typing it in completely. This feature is effective when it is easy to predict the word being typed based on those already typed, such as when there are a limited number of possible or commonly used words, or when editing text written in a highly-structured, easy-to-predict language. Autocomplete speeds up human-computer interactions in environments to which it is well suited. Autocomplete features are often enabled by default, and disabling or defeating them can sometimes be difficult for users to accomplish.
- Autovervollständigen ist eine Funktion, die eine Benutzereingabe sinnvoll ergänzt. Grundlage für die Vervollständigung ist in jedem Fall ein begrenzter Pool an Möglichkeiten, der sich äquivalent zum Fortschritt und ggf. Semantik der Benutzereingabe verkleinert. Sie wird von vielen Editoren und IDEs zur Verfügung gestellt. Es gibt verschiedene Möglichkeiten der Realisierung: Durch eine Dropdown-Liste, durch das Anzeigen eines möglichen Textes, durch das sofortige Einsetzen eines Vorlagen-Textes Beispiele dafür sind Verfahren wie Text on 9 keys (T9) beim Schreiben von SMS-Nachrichten oder Input Method Editoren, Schnellwahlen im Adressbuch, Ergänzungen von früheren Eingaben (etwa in Suchleisten), Autovervollständigen in Office-Produkten, wo es je nach Programm u. a. Datumsangaben oder Wörter vervollständigt, oder Befehlsergänzung über ein Command Line Interface, wie es bei einigen Betriebssystemen der Fall ist. In IDEs unterstützt eine syntaktische und semantische Überprüfung des schon eingegebenen Quelltexte den Programmierer mit einer Liste von Vorschlägen zur Autovervollständigung. Diese Liste an Quelltextvorschlägen umfasst zum Beispiel zuvor deklarierte Variablen, in dem Programmkontext erreichbare Methoden, Funktionen und Objekte bis zu umfangreichen Vorlagen von häufig verwendeten Codestücken.
- Le complètement ou complètement automatique, ou encore par anglicisme complétion ou autocomplétion, est une fonctionnalité informatique permettant à l'utilisateur de limiter la quantité d'informations qu'il saisit avec son clavier, en se voyant proposer un complément qui pourrait convenir à la chaîne de caractères qu'il a commencé à taper. De nombreux logiciels possèdent cette fonctionnalité : les éditeurs de texte prévus pour l'édition de code source, les traitements de texte, les interpréteurs de commandes ou encore les navigateurs web, ainsi que certains systèmes de saisie intuitive installés sur les téléphones mobiles. Le complètement impose au logiciel de prévoir le mot ou la phrase que l'utilisateur est susceptible de taper, avant que celui-ci ne l'ait entièrement saisi. Le complètement est donc disponible dans les cas où il est possible de prévoir le ou les prochains mots qui seront saisis, en se basant sur : les mots déjà saisis, ailleurs dans le document en cours d'édition ou lors d'éditions précédentes; une ou plusieurs listes de mots ou dictionnaires, pré-établis par l'utilisateur ou fournis avec le logiciel; les caractéristiques de l'application, par exemple les adresses d'un carnet d'adresses pour un client de messagerie, les marque-pages d'un navigateur web ou encore les fichiers d'un répertoire ou les commandes dans l'interpréteur de commandes d'un système d'exploitation; la structure du document édité de l'utilisateur, par exemple la grammaire d'un langage informatique dans un éditeur de code source. Le complètement permet d'accélérer la saisie sur un ordinateur, ce qui rend l'interaction avec les logiciels moins pénible et plus efficace. Il permet également de limiter les erreurs de saisie, en entrant sans intervention humaine les caractères qu'il reste à taper. Cette dernière qualité se vérifie essentiellement sur les mots longs, pour lesquels il suffit de taper les premières lettres.
- L'autocompletamento (autocompletion), in informatica, è una funzionalità offerta da molti programmi di videoscrittura, IDE e browser. È la capacità di intuire automaticamente quale parola (o espressione) stia per essere digitata da tastiera, solo in base alle prime lettere. La parola intuita compare a video come suggerimento, e l'utente può confermarla (in genere premendo un tasto come spazio o invio) oppure continuare a digitare normalmente nel caso la parola desiderata fosse in realtà un'altra. L'autocompletamento è applicabile efficacemente in tutti quei casi in cui il numero di possibili parole da autocompletare è limitato, tipicamente nei linguaggi di programmazione, nei documenti tecnici, nella digitazione di indirizzi (intuibili in base a una rubrica e/o a una cronologia).

- Automatische aanvulling, ook wel auto-aanvullen of autocomplete genoemd, is een optie die door veel broncode-editors, tekstverwerkers en webbrowsers gebruikt wordt. Bij automatisch aanvulling voorspelt het programma het woord of de zin die de gebruiker wil typen zonder dat deze dit al volledig heeft ingetikt. Deze aanpak kan vaak efficiënt gebruikt worden wanneer het relatief eenvoudig is om de nieuw ingevoerde woorden te voorspellen, gebaseerd op deze die al zijn ingevoerd, omdat een beperkt aantal woorden typisch zijn voor e-mailprogramma's, browsers, shells van besturingssystemen, of omdat de taal sterk gestructureerd is en makkelijk te voorspellen, zoals in broncode-editors. Automatische aanvulling maakt de interactie met de computer sneller en aangenamer, tenminste voor die toepassingen waar dit aangewezen is.
