The English term Austrians was applied to the population of Habsburg Austria from the 17th or 18th century. During the 19th century, it identified the citizens of the Empire of Austria (1804–1867), and until 1918 to the citizens of Cisleithania, Austria-Hungary's western half.

Si tratta d'altro canto anche di che hanno segnato la storia del XX secolo: Hitler era austriaco di nascita, dalla controparte abbiamo anche il cacciatore di nazisti Simon Wiesenthal. Gli austriaci sono in maggioranza cattolici, ma vi sono anche minoranze protestanti, specialmente nella capitale Vienna e nelle zone di confine come Stiria e Burgenland.
