Austere is an anonymous electronic music group specializing in ambient, dark ambient, drone, glitch-ambient, downtempo-style drum and bass and minimalist music. The group started working together in 1997 with their first release in 1998, and is based in the Pacific Northwest in Portland, Oregon. In regards to their Minimalist compositions and recordings, the group's work draws upon composer Steve Reich's concept of Process Music, as defined by his 1968 manifesto "Music as a Gradual Process".

The have also contributed music to films, and wrote the soundtrack for The Thin Horizon, an independent film written, directed and produced by Michael Peters of Artifexwerks located in Forest Grove, Oregon. In 2007, one of their tracks from the Dark Duck Records Drone Download Project was used in another independent film, Claude's Room. Austere's members have recorded solo works, as The Mystifying Oracle and Freq. Magnet. The latter has released two full CDs, a DVD, and has a recent track on a Hypnos compilation CD.
