Auslan is the sign language of the Australian deaf community. As with other sign languages, Auslan's grammar and vocabulary is quite distinct from English. Its invention cannot be attributed to any individual; rather, it is a natural language that developed organically over time. The number of people for whom Auslan is their primary or preferred language is difficult to determine. Recent studies have put the figure at 6500, a much lower figure than was previously thought, though a 2006 census showed 7150 used the language. The number may be diminishing, and although Auslan's status and recognition is growing, there is some speculation that it is an endangered language. Of those who use Auslan as their main language, only about 5% learned it from their parents, with the rest acquiring it from peers at school or later in life.
