Auguste Jean-Marie Pavie (Dinan 31 May 1847 - Thourie 7 May 1925) was a French colonial civil servant, explorer and diplomat who was instrumental in establishing French control over Laos in the last two decades of the 19th century. After a long career in Cambodia and Cochinchina, Pavie became the first French vice-consul in Luang Prabang in 1885, eventually becoming the first Governor-General and plenipotentiary minister of the newly formed French colony of Laos.

Zwischen 1879 und 1895 führte er eine Gruppe von etwa 40 Leuten an, die als La Mission Pavie am Mekong entlang durch Laos und Kambodscha sowie durch Tonkin, Annam und das südliche China streifte. Sie unternahmen dabei völkerkundliche Studien und kartographierten das Gebiet, um eine Telegrafenleitung von Phnom Penh nach Bangkok vorzubereiten. Daneben führten sie auch Buch über die natürlichen Ressourcen der bereisten Länder. Seit 1887 war Pavie französischer Vizekonsul in Luang Prabang, bis er 1892 als französischer Gesandter nach Bangkok berufen wurde. Dort war er für Frankreich mit den Verhandlungen zur französischen Annektierung von Laos und Teilen von Kambodscha beschäftigt. Gegen Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts verhandelte Pavie mit China über die Grenze zu Laos. Auguste Pavie starb am 7. Mai 1925 in Thourie, Dependance Ille-et-Vilaine.

Il s'illustra en négociant avec le Siam et en obtenant notamment la reconnaissance du protectorat français sur le haut Laos, en 1893. À la fin du XIX siècle, il fixa avec la Chine les frontières du Laos.
