Bei dem Spiel handelt es sich um ein Scrolling Shooter-Spiel. Das Spiel wurde von Jeff Minter programmiert. Veröffentlicht wurde es von Jeff Minters eigener Firma Llamasoft im Jahre 1983. Die Aufgabe des Spieler ist es mit einem kleinem Düsenflugzeug riesige gelbe Kamele zu erschießen, bevor diese an der Heimatbasis des Spielers ankommen. Jedes Kamel muss mehrfach vom Spieler getroffen werden, bevor es getötet worden ist. Gleichzeitig wird das Spiel dadurch erschwert, dass die Kamele ihrerseits zurückschießen. Verwirrenderweise wurde in den USA auch ein völlig andersartiges Spiel Minters aus der Gridrunner-Reihe unter dem Titel "Attack of the Mutant Camels" veröffentlicht.

Since the camels continuously move towards your base, and new camels are added every time one is destroyed, the game will eventually end in defeat. The game is perhaps inspired by the AT-AT attack sequence in The Empire Strikes Back, and gameplay is very similar to that of the Atari 2600 game based on the film. A sequel exists, named Revenge of the Mutant Camels. Confusingly, a very different game from Jeff Minter's Gridrunner series was also released in the US under the name Attack of the Mutant Camels.

Attack of the Mutant Camels è, fra i videogiochi per Commodore 64, uno fra i pochi che hanno acquisito lo status di "videogioco cult", nonostante fosse decisamente semplice, quasi primitivo, anche rispetto agli standard dell'epoca. Come lo stesso Minter ebbe ad ammettere, "... i cammelli non sono disegnati particolarmente bene, e in effetti sembrano più due uomini grassi con addosso un costume da cammello". Come Defender, può essere classificato come scrolling shooter, ovvero un gioco di "sparatorie su uno sfondo scorrevole" (un genere di videogioco piuttosto diffuso negli anni ottanta). L'ambientazione, al confine fra fantascienza, surrealismo e umorismo, era ispirata alla sequenza iniziale del film L'Impero colpisce ancora (uscito pochi anni prima del gioco). Come Luke Skywalker sul pianeta ghiacciato Hoth, il giocatore pilota un piccolo caccia che deve fronteggiare enormi cammelli alieni che sparano palle di fuoco dalla bocca. Per ogni cammello abbattuto, nuovi ne entrano sullo schermo; non accade nient'altro. Come nella tradizione dei giochi di Minter, tuttavia, l'alta velocità dell'azione e l'efficacia del controllo da joystick contribuiscono a fare del gioco un'esperienza fortemente adrenalinica. Del gioco fu realizzato anche un seguito, Revenge of the Mutant Camels (La vendetta dei cammelli mutanti), di natura ancora più spiccatamente umoristica e surreale. Il successo dei "cammelli mutanti" fu tale che in seguito un altro gioco di Minter venne commercializzato negli Stati Uniti (scorrettamente) col titolo Attack of the Mutant Camels.
