It was made without the knowledge or involvement of Goscinny and Uderzo (instead being produced by the Belgian company responsible for the animated Tintin films), and they were unable to stop the production and release of the film in time. Instead they ordered production halted on the sequel, Asterix and the Golden Sickle, and worked with the company to produce the next film, based on Asterix and Cleopatra.
