Vergeben wird diese Akkreditierung von der Non-Profit-Organisation AACSB International, die 1916 in St. Louis, USA gegründet wurde. Gründungsmitglied ist unter anderem die Harvard University. Im Jahr 2009 hat die AACSB ihr erstes Büro außerhalb der USA eröffnet. Als Regionalstandort wurde die südostasiatische Metropole Singapur gewählt.

The stated mission is to advance quality management education worldwide through accreditation and thought leadership. It is regarded as the benchmark for business school quality among the academic community. In 1991, the AACSB adopted new accreditation standards that were more flexible. For many years, only North American business schools were accredited by AACSB (at that time, AACSB stood for American Association of Collegiate Schools of Business). It was an early supporter of internationalizing business education. The first school outside North America to be accredited was the top French business school ESSEC, in 1997. In 2009, AACSB opened its first regional headquarters in Singapore. Its founding members include Columbia University, Dartmouth College, Harvard University, New York University, Northwestern University, The Ohio State University, Tulane University, Drake University, University of California, Berkeley, University of Chicago, Purdue University, University of Illinois, University of Nebraska, University of Pennsylvania, University of Pittsburgh,University of South Florida, University of South Florida St. Petersburg, The University of Texas, University of Wisconsin–Madison, and Yale University. As of April 2009, the AACSB accredits 567 institutions on six continents. An institution can be accredited in business, or in both business and accountancy.

Au mois d'avril 2009, elles sont 567 à bénéficier de ce label. L'AACSB a été fondée en 1916 par plusieurs universités américaines et la première accréditation fut délivrée en 1919. L'ESSEC fut la première école non nord-américaine à être accréditée par l'AACSB, en 1997 seulement. En 2009, l'AACSB a ouvert son premier bureau régional en Asie du sud-est, à Singapour. Les écoles supérieures de commerces les plus sélectives cherchent à faire accréditer leur diplôme par l'AACSB Il faut néanmoins noter qu'il y a une grande différence entre le fait pour une école d'être « membre » de l'AASCB, qui ne nécessite que le respect de quelques critères peu contraignant (notamment de payer sa cotisation), et celui d'avoir son diplôme « accrédité » par cet organisme, ce qui n'est possible qu'après un contrôle le plus souvent assez rigoureux de la qualité de l'école et de la formation. Plusieurs écoles de niveau modeste tentent d'entretenir l'ambiguïté entre ces deux notions, pourtant fort éloignées. On remarque enfin, en examinant la liste des institutions labellisées, que ces institutions, tout en étant d'un niveau au minimum satisfaisant, ne sont pas nécessairement d'un niveau très élevé. C'est particulièrement vrai pour les universités américaines labellisées : à côté d'universités réputées mondialement, on trouve des universités disposant de moyens importants mais parfois relativement peu sélectives. Cela est moins vrai à l'étranger où, en général, on ne trouve représentées parmi les institutions labellisées que les meilleures formations en management.
