Lindbeck has done research on unemployment, the welfare state (including the effect of changing social norms), and China's reformed economy. Lindbeck received a Ph.D. from Stockholm University in 1963 with the doctoral thesis A study in monetary analysis. He is well-known to students of economics for his quip that "rent ceilings are the most effective means yet for destroying cities, even more effective than the hydrogen bomb. " Lindbeck previously headed the Institute for International Economic Studies at Stockholm University, Sweden. In 1992-1993 he headed the co-called "Lindbeck commission", which was appointed by the Government of Sweden to propose reforms in light of the then-ongoing economic crisis. Lindbeck is a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, and previously chaired the Academy's prize committee for the Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences. Lindbeck has published a large number of scientific articles and books, including: The housing shortage. Assar Lindbeck var ordförande för den så kallade Lindbeckkommissionen (officiellt Ekonomikommissionen) som utsågs av regeringen 1992-1993 och kom med många förslag, bitvis kontroversiella, för att förbättra Sveriges ekonomi och konkurrenskraft i den då rådande ekonomiska krisen. Lindbecks forskning har bland annat behandlat arbetslöshet (och insider-outsider-teori som förklaring av denna), välfärdsstaten (inklusive effekten av föränderliga sociala normer) och Kinas reformerade ekonomi. Han disputerade för doktorsgraden vid Stockholms universitet 1963 på avhandlingen A study in monetary analysis. Under åren 1971 till 1995 var han chef för IIES. Lindbeck är ledamot av Kungliga Vetenskapsakademien, av Ingenjörsvetenskapsakademien sedan 1970, och satt under perioden 1969 till 1994 i Kommittén för Sveriges Riksbanks pris i ekonomisk vetenskap till Alfred Nobels minne, varav 1980 till 1994 som kommitténs ordförande.
