Like all languages that have a predominance in any particular region of Perú, Asháninka is an official language in the area in which it is spoken as provided by the Constitution. Literacy rates range from 10% to 30% compared to 15% to 25% literacy for the second language, Spanish. The Campa (or Pre-Andean) group of the Maipurean language family includes what have been called Asháninka, Gran Pajonal Campa, Ashéninka, Axaninca, Machiguenga, and Nomatsiguenga. As these are all very closely related linguistic systems, the decision to call them dialects of a single language or different languages rests on social and political considerations rather than mere linguistic similarity or difference, as in so many other places in the world. Attempts to unify the varieties with one written standard have not been successful. Asháninka should not be confused with the related language Ashéninka and is also close to Caquinte and Machiguenga.

El término Campa se considera ofensivo por parte de los hablantes de esta lengua. Todos los hablantes pertenecen al grupo étnico asháninca que incluye entre 25 mil y 30 mil individuos. Muchos de los asháninca tienen todavía como lengua materna el asháninca. De hecho en el territorio asháninca esta lengua es nominalmente cooficial dentro del territorio de los asháninca junto con el español, de acuerdo con la constitución peruana. La alfabetización en asháninca está entre el 10% y el 30%, frente a la alfabetización en español que está entre el 15% y el 25%. Debido a la gran similitud de que gurada con todos los lectos arahuacos preandinos, la descisión de llamarlos dialectos de una sola lengua o idiomas diferentes descansa en consideraciones políticas y sociales más que en la similitud lingüística. los intentos de unificar las variedades en un solo estándar de escritura no han sido exitosos.
