Nachdem er 1948 den Bachelorabschluss auf der Wayne State University gemacht hatte, erreichte er 1949 den Master an der Columbia University in New York, an der er 1952 auch zum Ph. D. promovierte. An dieser Universität lehrte er seit 1951, von 1966 bis zur seiner Emeritierung als Professor. Seine Arbeitsthemen sind Ästhetik, Kunsttheorie, Philosophie der Geschichte, Philosophie des Geistes, Handlungstheorie, Mystik. Danto schrieb auch für die Kunstzeitung Artforum.
