- Art-Punk oder „Experimental-Punk“ bezeichnet eine besondere Abart der Punk-Musik und eine besondere Philosophie der Punk-Bewegung. Gebraucht wurde der Begriff ausschließlich für Bands wie Television oder die Patti Smith Group, die Punk in erster Linie als Kunstform verstanden. Ein weiterer Grund war, dass die Mitglieder der Gruppen zumeist von Kunsthochschulen kamen und auch jenseits der eigentlichen Bands häufig als Künstler und Lyriker aktiv waren und sind. Hauptinspiration für die meisten frühen Art-Punk-Gruppen waren The Velvet Underground, die von einigen sogar als die allererste Art-Punk-Band angesehen wird. Als weitere Vorgänger des Art-Punk gelten zudem Rocket from the Tombs sowie die Modern Lovers. Musikalisch ist Art-Punk zwar rau und oftmals aggressiv, jedoch auch äußerst experimentell und lyrisch, manchmal werden Versatzstücke des Blues, Jazz oder Folk und Singer/Songwriter-Elemente verwendet. Formen des Art-Punks, die eher die Performance betonen, werden auch manchmal „Punk Cabaret“ genannt. Neben Patti Smith sind vor allem R.E.M. als Gruppe zu nennen, die ihre Wurzeln ursprünglich im Art-Punk hat In den 1980er Jahren wurde der Begriff „Art-Punk“ jedoch zunehmend seltener benutzt und die Bands eher in die Post-Punk-Schublade gesteckt, wobei der Einfluss des Art-Punks auf z.B. die No-Wave-Bewegung jedoch enorm war – manchmal werden Art-Punk und No Wave sogar gleichgesetzt. Auch der Anarcho-Punk war in seinen Anfangstagen stark mit der Art-Punk-Szene verwoben. Seit dem Erfolg moderner Art-Punk Gruppen wie den The Dresden Dolls, Yeah Yeah Yeahs und Art Brut wird der Begriff jedoch auch von Mainstream-Medien wieder häufiger aufgegriffen und die Szene, die bisher eher als Randerscheinung galt, erhält wieder vermehrt Aufmerksamkeit. In their book Art into Pop, Simon Frith and Howard Horne described the band managers of the 1970s punk bands as "the most articulate theorists of the art punk movement", with Bob Last of Fast Product identified as one of the first to apply art theory to marketing, and Tony Wilson's Factory Records described as "applying the Bauhaus principle of the same 'look' for all the company's goods". Anna Szemere traces the beginnings of the Hungarian art-punk subculture to 1978, when punk band The Spions performed three concerts which drew on conceptualist performance art and Antonin Artaud's "theatre of cruelty", with neo-avant garde/anarchist manifestos handed out to the audience. Wire's Colin Newman described art punk in 2006 as "the drug of choice of a whole generation."
