After wartime service with the Royal Irish Fusiliers he was Fellow, Lecturer, Dean and Chaplain of Pembroke College, Oxford until 1937. Following a spell as Principal of Salisbury Theological College and further wartime service, this time with the RNVR, he was appointed Bishop of Saint Andrews, Dunkeld and Dunblane in 1950. Retiring five years later, he died on 15 November 1963.
