This station was opened on October 3 1988 on the site of the old Arlesey and Henlow station which was closed, together with the adjacent Three Counties station, to passengers on 5 January 1959 and goods on 28 November 1960 . This was not as a result of the "Beeching Report", which was not published until 1963, but was due rather to declining receipts. It was designed to be fully accessible to wheelchairs although as of 2006 the up platform to London Kings Cross is only accessible until 12.30 p.m. when the booking clerk finishes duty for the day. The down platform to Peterborough northbound is fully accessible at all times. However this is of no use to wheelchair users who cannot leave their chair as there are no facilities for 'loading and unloading'. The nearest stations for this are at Hitchin to the south and Huntingdon to the North.
