Sun Ray ultra thin clients use the Appliance Link Protocol (ALP) to talk to Sun Ray (SRSS) servers. It consists of several components: Session Protocol TCP Client -> Server 7009 Render Protocol UDP Server -> Client and UDP Client -> Server, random ports, clients tells the server via the Session Protocol which UDP port to use. Device Protocol TCP Client -> Server 7011 The protocol can be seen with a network scanner, if the ray server and client are not using encryption.

Look at http://sourceforge. com/projects/softray for an open (work in progress) implementation in Java. Sun seems to release a (closed source) client for Windows in SRS5 . Suns client will be limited to connect to a SRS5 server only, refering to SRS5 EA1 (early access 1).
