Apo Island Beach Resort is the smaller and more exclusive, Liberty's Lodge is larger. The island is under the jurisdiction of the municipality of Dauin, Negros Oriental, and is one of the municipality's 23 barangays. As of the 2007 census, the island has a population of 745.

Auf der 72 ha großen Insel mit einer Ausdehnung von etwa 1.500 x 700 m drängen sich eine handvoll vulkanische Basalthügel bis max. 140 m Höhe bei den Koordinaten 9° 05' Nord, 123° 15' Ost. 30 min dauert die Überfahrt bei ruhiger See mit kleinen Auslegerbooten vom Pier von Malatapay (Maluay). Bei häufig aufkommenden stärkerem Wellengang und gleichzeitig starker Strömung in der relativ schmalen Meeresstraße kann es auch deutlich länger dauern. Ca. 700 Menschen, davon gut 25% Kinder, leben auf dem Eiland an der Grenze zwischen Mindanao See und Sulu See. 1983 startete die Silliman Universität von Dumaguete auf Negros, zunächst gegen den Widerstand der ansässigen Fischer, ein zukunftsweisendes Umweltprojekt, das nun seine Früchte für Anwohner, Umwelt und Touristen trägt. Etwa 640 ha Meeresgebiet an der Ostküste wurden als absolute Schutzzone ausgewiesen, in der jegliche Form von Fischfang verboten ist. Im Gegenzug kassieren die Einwohner 75% des Touristeneintrittsgeldes. Das Geld kommt der ganzen Gemeinde zugute, z.B. wurden damit Wassertanks gebaut, ein Generator gekauft, ein Boot für die Küstenwacht angeschafft usw.. Die restlichen 25% fließen der Umweltschutzvereinigung zu. Die Einwohner beziehen ihr Einkommen hauptsächlich aus dem Fischfang. Die Insel wird bei Tauchern und Schnorchlern sehr geschätzt. In der Schutzzone befindet sich ein Korallengebiet, das im weiten Umkreis einzigartig ist. Es können zudem der auffallende gelbschwarze Oriolus chinensis chinensis beobachtet werden, auch Prachtfregattvögel stellen sich gelegentlich ein, insbesondere bei aufkommendem Starkwind.
