Charismatique, doué (Anton joue plus de 80 instruments différents, comme il l'aurait laissé entendre lors d'une interview), parfois bagarreur, mégalomane, un temps accro à l'héroïne et toujours porté sur l'alcool, sa personnalité très "rock'n'roll" en a fait le personnage principal du reportage Dig! d'Ondi Timoner. Son inspiration musicale lui vient de celui qui a formé les Rolling Stones, le célèbre Brian Jones. En effet dans le Brian Jonestown Massacre, transparaissent fortement des influences orientales, indiennes, psyché, que Anton Newcombe amène lui-même en composant pratiquement tous les titres. Son grand talent est visible dans Dig! où il conçoit l'album Give it Back ! en seulement une semaine, avec peu de matériel technique, mais une flopée d'instruments exotiques utilisés de façon impressionnante. Cet album reste d'ailleurs un des préféré des fans et caractérise bien le groupe. Son choix de rester indépendant, pour une liberté totale de création, le laisse peu connu du grand public. Il le dit lui même : "Je suis le messager et vous (les maisons de disques) ceux qui postent". Antipathique pour certains, génie pour d'autres, la musique talentueuse d'Anton Newcombe n'en mérite pas moins une écoute de sa discographie.
