Antofagasta is a port city in northern Chile, about 700 miles (1,130 km) north of Santiago. It is the capital of both Antofagasta Province and Antofagasta Region. According to the 2002 census, the city has an urban population of 281,155 and a municipal population of 296,905. The city's name comes from either a Quechua or Aymara word for "town of the great saltpeter bed."

La ville fut fondée par ordre exprès du président bolivien Mariano Melgarejo Valencia le 27 août 1868. Le 2 octobre 1868, le nom de Chimba est donné à la ville mais peu après, le président le change pour Antofagasta. Cette ville fait partie du Chili depuis le 14 février 1879, suite à l'occupation par les troupes chiliennes de la ville. Ce fut le lancement de la guerre du Pacifique. La ville ne dispose pas d'eau potable par l'apport de rivière. Pour subvenir aux besoins de la ville, l'eau est cherchée directement depuis la cordillère.
