- Anthology Film Archives is a cinema and film archive in the East Village neighborhood of New York City devoted to the preservation and exhibition of experimental film. It is the only non-profit organization of its kind in New York City, independent through self-support. In addition to preserving and exhibiting films (about 700 public screenings yearly), Anthology also publishes books and catalogs and houses a research library and art gallery. The Archives was founded by Jonas Mekas, Stan Brakhage, P. Adams Sitney and Peter Kubelka and opened on November 30th, 1970. Today it keeps ca. 11,000 films and 3,000 videotapes and is thus one of the largest archives of avant-garde and experimental cinema in the world. The collection which focuses on American filmmakers also holds many commercial and industrial negatives deposited at the institution by insolvent films laboratories. In 2005, the Archives released Unseen Cinema: Early American Avant Garde Film 1894-1941, a DVD retrospective of early experimental film. That same year, the Archives was among 406 New York City arts and social service institutions to receive part of a $20 million grant from the Carnegie Corporation, which was made possible through a donation by New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg. From 2004 through 2006, members of the Anthology Film Archives community organized LAB HD, an ambient televisionchannel that broadcast in high-definition nationally in the USA. During this period LAB HD produced dozens of experimental and avant-garde films in its facilities. In 2007, it was among over 530 New York City arts and social service institutions to receive part of a $20 million grant from the Carnegie Corporation, which was made possible through a donation by New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg. In the 2004 movie Spider-Man 2, the building was used as the exterior of Doctor Octopus' laboratory.

Idag har Anthology Film Archives över 120 000 filmtitlar i sitt arkiv. Anthology Film Archives öppnade den 30 november 1970 och grundarna var Jonas Mekas, Stan Brakhage, P. Adams Sitney och Peter Kubelka. Först låg den i Josepph Papp's public Theater men flyttade 1974 till 80 Wooster Street. Från och med 12 oktober 1988 ligger Anthology Film Archives i East Village i Manhattan's Second Avenue Courthouse building där det finns två biografer, ett referensbibliotek, en avdelning för restaurering av film, administrativa kontor och ett konstgalleri. Dagligen visas nya och klassiska filmer och deras referensbibliotek innehåller den största samlingen material som dokumenterar historien om avantgarde- och independetfilm och video. Samlingen innehåller böcker, tidningar, fotografier, affischer, ljudinspelningar av föreläsningar och intervjuer, kataloger tillsammans med arkiv från filmskapare och organisationer som i sin tur bland annat innehåller manuskript, brev, anteckningsböcker och tidningsklipp. Anthology Film Archives har ansvarat för arkiveringen och restaureringen av filmskapare som Stan Brakhage, Joseph Cornell, Maya Deren, Bruce Baille, Jordan Belson, Jonas Mekas, Paul Sharits och Harry Smith etcetera.
