Noch deutlicher bringt My Back Pages eine Abwendung des Ichs in dem Song von der Rolle eines Predigers und Künders vermeintlich einfacher Wahrheiten und eine Absage an Schwarz-Weiß-Denken zum Ausdruck. Bob Dylan nahm das Album in einer einzigen Session am 9. Juni 1964 auf. Dabei gab es auch einen ersten Versuch Mr. Tambourine Man aufzunehmen, das aber erst auf dem folgenden Album erschien. Das Album erreichte Platz 43 in den US-Charts und 1965 Platz 8 im UK. Bei Teilen der Folkszene sorgte das Album für Befremden. So veröffentlichte Irwin Silber in der von ihm herausgegebenen Folk-Zeitschrift Sing Out! einen offenen Brief an Dylan, in dem er seiner Sorge Ausdruck verlieh, der Sänger drohe durch die Begleitumstände von Ruhm und Erfolg den Kontakt zur Basis zu verlieren, was auch in seinen neuen Liedern zum Ausdruck komme. Der Folksänger Phil Ochs hingegen verteidigte im Broadside Magazine Dylans Recht auf Wandel. Der kanadische Songwriter Neil Young bezieht sich im Song Flags Of Freedom auf seinem 2006 erschienenen Album Living With War deutlich auf den Song Chimes Of Freedom.
