The decision to allow the ordination of women was just one part of a larger theological shift introduced by the revisions and opposed by the Congress of St. Louis. As a result of the desire to maintain the Apostolic tradition of male-only clergy and the exclusive use of historical Anglican liturgical forms, the church was separated and the advocates carry on with the tradition under the name of "Anglican Church in North America". The name was later changed to the Anglican Catholic Church. The Congress's statement of principles, the "Affirmation of St. Louis", summarized the new church's reason for being as follows: “…the Anglican Church of Canada and the Protestant Episcopal Church in the United States of America, by their unlawful attempts to alter Faith, Order and Morality (especially in their General Synod of 1975 and General Convention of 1976), have departed from Christ's One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church. ”

Seit den 1970er Jahren haben sich dann verschiedene Gemeinden aus dem Weltverband der Anglikanischen Kirche herausgelöst. 1977 kam es dann in Saint Louis zu einem internationalen Kongress von etwa 2000 Bischöfen, Priestern und Laien. Dieser Kongress beschloss eine Rückkehr zu den alten Traditionen und Glaubensgrundsätzen der Anglikanischen Kirche und trennte sich von der zur Zeit bestehenden Anglikanischen Kirche. Als ersten Bischof wählten sie den emeritierten Bischof von Springfield. 1984 schloss sich die Anglican Church of India (nicht zu verwechseln mit der ebenfalls anglikanischen und deutlich größeren Church of North India und Church of South India, die beide Mitglieder der Anglikanischen Gemeinschaft sind) mit ihren 5 Diözesen der Anglican-Catholic Church an. 1991 verließ ein Drittel der Pfarreien die Kirche und gründeten zusammen mit der American Episcopal Church die Anglican Church in America. Heute zählt die Anglican-Catholic Church 17 Diözesen in zwei Kirchenprovinzen und ist auf allen Kontinenten zu finden. Seit Oktober 2008 besteht volle Kirchengemeinschaft mit der Anglican Province of Christ the King und der United Episcopal Church of North America.
