Angelos Messaris (1910-1978) is a former Greek footballer. He is widely regarded as the best Greek player of the pre-war era. This is probably also due to the myth that followed for decades his sudden and mysterious early leaving from football. Angelos Messaris made two reverse headers after which the score was tied and received great cheering. This was his last appearance. He never played football again. Angelos Messaris descended from Cefalonia, an island in the Ionian sea. Actually he was born in Cape Town of South Africa in 1910. In 1927 he came to Athens and after a short stay at the team of Goudi he was transferred to Panathinaikos. His dribbling skills, his perfect control together with his versatile mind and hard work in the football field elevated him to the top. During his short football career (four years altogether) he scored 53 goals: 23 in the EPSA championship, 11 in the Panhellenic championship, 2 with the National Team (he played four times) and 17 in international and friendly games of PAO and the mixed team of Athens. He was first scorer in the 1929-30 season with 7 goals. At the legendary victory over Olympiakos with 8-2 he scored the first three goals and actually served three more. Another famous victory was that over Aris with 4-1 in Thessaloniki which called forth the following little poem We scored eight against Olympiakos and four more against Aris - hooray Angele Messaris. After giving up football Messaris returned to South Africa where he concluded his studies and following this he came back to Greece where he became an executive manager at the Doxiades enterprises. It is said that the reason why Messaris left Panathinaikos rests on the unbearable pressure Apostolos Nikolaidis was putting on him in order to persuade him to commit himself to football and forget about his studies at the National Technical University of Athens. In a short telephone talk he had with the journalist Dimitris Lyberopoulos back in 1973 he said: Please leave me alone... the football player you are asking for died in 1931! He died in 1978 and his funeral was attended by thousands of people.

Während eines seiner Spiele fiel er dem damaligen Trainer von Panathinaikos Athen auf, der sich für eine Verpflichtung Messaris stark machte. So wechselte er 1930 zu Panathinaikos und sah sich trotz seines recht geringen Alters in der Aufgabe des Führungsspielers seiner neuen Mannschaft. Mit Panathinaikos gewann Messaris 1930 die erste gesamtgriechische Meisterschaft des Vereins. Unvergessen bleibt dabei der 1. Juni 1930 als Messaris beim 8:2-Erfolg über den Erzrivalen Olympiakos Piräus zwei Tore schoss und drei weitere vorbereitete. Auch wenn es damals aussah als ob Messaris vor einer großen Karriere stehen würde, fand diese ein jähes Ende. Grund hierfür war ein Konflikt zwischen Angelos Messaris und Apostolos Nikolaidis. Messaris hatte den Wunsch, sich an der Universität Athen zu immatrikulieren, scheiterte jedoch, obwohl er ein hervorragender Schüler war, gleich drei mal bei diesem Versuch. Messaris mutmaßte, dass der einflussreiche Nikolaidis die Ablehnungen veranlasst hatte, um zu erreichen, dass er sich nur auf den Sport konzentrierte. Messaris traf daraufhin die für den Verein folgenschwere Entscheidung, im Alter von gerade einmal 22 Jahren seine Karriere zu beenden. Die Anhänger waren über diese Entscheidung entsetzt, und hunderte Menschen zogen vor sein Anwesen, um ihn umstimmen. Messaris ließ sich allerdings nicht beirren und blieb bei seiner Entscheidung. So kam es, dass Messaris letztes Spiel die 0:2-Niederlage am 23. April 1931 gegen den Lokalrivalen AEK Athen war. Auch wenn er nur für kurze Zeit für Panathinaikos aktiv war, schaffte es Messaris, der auf insgesamt 53 Tore kam, einen Mythos um seinen Namen aufzubauen, der bis heute anhält. Der 1978 verstorbene Messaris gilt bis heute als einer der beliebtesten Spieler aller Zeiten bei Panathinaikos und als der beste griechische Spieler in der Zeit vor dem Zweiten Weltkrieg; seine Beerdigung wurde von Tausenden Zuschauern verfolgt.
