De toediening van de medicijnen die de anesthesioloog hiervoor gebruikt berusten op 3 pijlers: een slaapmiddel een (sterke) pijnstiller en een spierverslapper (spierrelaxans). In overleg met de patiënt zoekt de anesthesioloog naar de methode van voorkeur: algehele anesthesie of loco-regionale anesthesie, het tijdelijk uitschakelen van een lichaamsonderdeel (bijvoorbeeld d.m.v. spinaal-anesthesie, epiduraalanesthesie, plexusanesthesie). Dit is niet alleen afhankelijk van het soort onderzoek of operatie, maar ook van de patiënt. Hiervoor wordt de patiënt pre-operatief beoordeeld tijdens het pre-operatief spreekuur (POS) door de anesthesioloog, om zo de meest veilige en adequate manier van anesthesie te kunnen toepassen. Anesthesioloog wordt men door na de algemene artsenopleiding de vijfjarige specialisatie anesthesiologie te volgen. Van de 5-jarige opleiding zit men 4 jaar in een van de 8 Academische Ziekenhuizen of het St. Antonius Ziekenhuis te Nieuwegein. Daarnaast brengt men 1 jaar door in een gelieerd opleidingsziekenhuis voor de zogenaamde perifere stage. Voorbeelden van deze ziekenhuizen zijn: het Sint Franciscus Gasthuis te Rotterdam, het Amphia Ziekenhuis te Breda, het Albert Schweitzer ziekenhuis te Dordrecht en het OLVG te Amsterdam.
