In his active playing career he played for Assen, Valkenburg, Geleen and Nijmegen. His skills were his strong passing-game and his ability to make his team mates play better. Furthermore he became a solid part of Nijmegen's Youth Program, that produced some talented youngsters. When Tenbult went to Geleen he formed a couple with Canadian winger Jamie Conway. During his career he acted as a player-coach season at Nijmegen, but after this first year he decided that year he would rather play again. He helped Nijmegen to clinch the title in 1993. After the dramatic season 1993/1994, when Nijmegen went bankrupt, he was one of the players that decided to stay at the club to help rebuild it to its former glory. He succeeded and slowly Nijmegen became a force to be reckoned with again in Dutch ice hockey. In 1996 Nijmegen won the Dutch Cup, followed by the championship the next year. Tenbult was coaching the Smoke Eaters from Geleen after having coached Utrecht and Heerenveen for a couple of years. He even returned on the ice as a troubleshooter for Heerenveen after having done the same for Utrecht. The last he was coaching was in 2007 in The Hague
