Originally a stage actor, he works predominantly in supporting roles on television and in low-budget films. He is best known for his role as the serial-killer Scorpio in the crime film Dirty Harry (1971), the role of Larry Cotton in the horror film Hellraiser (1987), and his recurring role as Elim Garak on the science fiction television series Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (1993–1999). He and wife Irene are the parents of actress Rachel Robinson who appeared on Deep Space Nine as well.

Zur selben Zeit spielte er bereits Gastrollen in diversen Fernsehserien. Nachdem Robinson 1971 den Killer Scorpio in Dirty Harry gespielt hatte, kam seine Filmkarriere vorläufig zu einem Stillstand. Er setzte seine Arbeit am Theater und mit episodischen Fernsehauftritten fort. 1977 wirkte er in dem Film Ryan’s Hope mit, der eine Emmy-Nominierung erhielt. Als er dann schließlich 1985 den L.A. Drama Ciritics Circle Best Actor Award erhielt, hatte er sich endgültig im Geschäft etabliert. Andrew J. Robinson wurde 1992 für Star Trek: Deep Space Nine gecastet, er war anfangs für die Rolle des Odo vorgesehen. Diese ging jedoch letztendlich an René Auberjonois und Robinson erhielt die Rolle des Cardassianers Elim Garak. Nebenbei führte Robinson in zahlreichen Episoden von Star Trek: Deep Space Nine sowie Star Trek: Raumschiff Voyager Regie. Schließlich schrieb Andrew J. Robinson im Jahre 2000 den Deep-Space-Nine-Roman A Stitch in Time, die Biographie Garaks. Seit 1970 ist Robinson mit seiner Frau Irene verheiratet.
