He is the former Provost of the University, taking office in October 2004 and leaving office on October 1, 2008. On 3 June 2008, Oxford University announced that Andrew Hamilton has been nominated for the post of Vice-Chancellor for seven years from 1 October 2009, succeeding Dr John Hood. The appointment was confirmed on 16 June. Hamilton's research has spanned porphoryn, supramolecular, medicinal, bioorganic chemistry and chemical biology. His lab is most noted for the design of barbituate hosts, farnesyl tranferase inhibitors, protein surface binders, and helix mimetics. Hamilton lives in Guilford, Connecticut with his wife Jennifer. He has three children, who all attended or attend Yale: Allistair, Claire, and Malcolm.
