In school he was an All American high school wrestler, and he won three State Wrestling Championships, becoming the New England Wrestling Champion in 1981. A former senior vice president of the Detroit Pistons basketball team, Appleby formed General Sports and Entertainment in Detroit, Michigan in 1998. In January 2008, General Sports and Entertainment purchased Derby County Football Club in England. As a result, Appleby became the chairman of the club. However, Adam Pearson is the day-to-day de facto chairman, and has been given the title of "Chairman of Football"
