- Andrei Sergeyevich Bubnov was a Bolshevik revolutionary leader in Russia, and member of the Left Opposition. Andrei Bubnov was born in Ivanovo-Voznesensk on 23 March 1883. He studied at the Moscow Agricultural Institute and while a student joined the Russian Social Democratic Labour Party. He supported the Bolshevik faction and over the next few years was arrested thirteen times. In 1909 Bubnov was made an agent of the Central Committee in Moscow but the following year he was back in prison. On his release he was sent to organize workers in Nizhny Novgorod. He also contributed to Pravda. On the outbreak of the First World War Bubnov became involved in the anti-war movement. He was arrested in October, 1916, and exiled to Siberia. Bubnov returned to Moscow after the February Revolution. He joined the Moscow Soviet and was elected as one of the seven members of the Politburo. As a member of the Military Revolutionary Committee he helped organize the October Revolution. During the Russian Civil War Bubnov joined the Red Army and fought on the Ukrainian Front. After the war he joined the Moscow Party Committee, and became a member of the Left Opposition. Andrei Bubnov signed the Declaration of 46 in October 1923, but in January, 1924, he switched to supporting Stalin and was rewarded by being appointed as Head of Political Control of the Red Army. Elected to Central Committee he replaced Lunacharsky as People's Commissar for Education. As Commissar for Education he ended the period of progressive, experimental educational practices and switched the emphasis to training in practical industrial skills. He was expelled from the Party Central Committee in November 1937, arrested and perished in the Great Purge. Bubnov was posthumously rehabilitated.

Il fit ses études à l'Institut Agronomique de Moscou et, pendant cette période, adhéra au Parti Social-Démocrate en 1903. Il faisait partie de la faction bolchevik de ce parti et à ce titre, pendant les années qui suivirent, notamment après la révolution de 1905 à laquelle il participa, fut arrêté treize fois par la police tsariste. En 1909, il fut désigné comme membre du comité central à Moscou, ce qui lui valut de retourner en prison dès l'année suivante. Après sa libération, il fut délégué à Nijni Novgorod afin d'y organiser le mouvement ouvrier. Il participa aussi au journal la Pravda et soutiendra un temps la fraction otzoviste qui, sous la direction d'Alexander Bogdanov, prônait alors (1909) le boycott de la III° Douma. Lorsque éclata la Première Guerre mondiale, Boubnov s'investit dans le mouvement des opposants à la guerre. Il fut à nouveau arrêté en 1916 et, cette fois, relégué en Sibérie. En octobre 1917, il est au Politburo, fait partie du directoire insurrectionnel secret et du Comité militaire révolutionnaire. A partir de 1918, il occupe des postes de responsabilité. En tant que membre du Comité Central à cette époque, il est un partisan affirmé du centralisme démocratique lors des débats du X° Congrès de mars 1921. Après un soutien timide à Trotski en octobre 1923, il rejoint la « troïka » en décembre et ose critiquer Nadejda Kroupskaïa, la compagne de Lénine. Conseiller auprès du Kuomintang en 1928, il prône avec Borodine le soutien à Tchang Kaï-chek. Il rompt avec Trotski au début de cette année et remplace en 1929 Lounatcharsky au Commissariat à l'Instruction qu'il va diriger jusqu'en 1937. Relevé de ses fonctions à cette date, il est arrêté comme tant de « vieux bolchéviques » et exécuté en 1940 (d'autres sources indiquent qu'il est mort en prison ou même vivant en 1956, comme Hélène Carrère d'Encausse, mais sa « liquidation » avant la guerre est très probable). Boubnov a été historien officiel du parti, mais après son arrestation ses œuvres ont été bannies par le pouvoir.
