- Americana is an amalgam of roots music formed by the confluence of the shared and varied traditions that make up the American musical ethos; specifically those sounds that are merged from folk, country, rhythm & blues, rock & roll and other external influential styles. Americana is popularly referred to, especially in print, as "Alternative Country", alt-country or sometimes alt. country.
- El americana es un género musical basado en la música tradicional de Estados Unidos, y fusionado con elementos o puntos de vista más actuales y/o "alternativos". Toma prestados elementos del folk, rock, country blues, bluegrass o hillbilly, country alternativo o rockabilly. El género es una especie de cajón desastre en el que se introducen los grupos y músicos que, en la actualidad, tocan variantes de la música de raíces estadounidense; suelen tener en común el aportar una dosis de "misticismo", una mística de los espacios abiertos; en general se considera como pionero del género a Gram Parsons, músico que cambió la concepción del country en los 60 y 70, dándole ese toque místico. Uno de los máximos exponentes del sonido americana es la revista bi-mensual No Depression. El nombre de la revista se obtuvo del álbum homónimo del grupo Uncle Tupelo, uno de los grupos que puso el americana en el centro del panorama musical, tanto estadounidense como mundial. El término Americana, muchas veces se emplea como sinónimo de country alternativo.

- Americana is een verzamelnaam voor een muziekstijl waar een grote verscheidenheid aan artiesten bij in valt te delen. Over het algemeen wordt hier muziek mee getypeerd die is afgeleid van authentieke country, folk en blues in een modern jasje. Stijlen die hierbij zijn in te delen zijn onder andere alternatieve country, rootsmuziek en indie-pop met country en/of folk invloeden. Alternatieve country typeert country die teruggrijpt naar de elementaire sfeer van de grondleggers van countrymuziek zoals Hank Williams. De term rootsmuziek omschrijft een iets bredere stijl, naast country namelijk ook blues en folk. Als belangrijke invloed voor de hedendaagse americana wordt de muziek van Gram Parsons en Townes Van Zandt genoemd. De meeste vertolkers komen uit de Verenigde Staten. Enkele voorbeelden van bekende Americana artiesten zijn Steve Earle, Ryan Adams, Boris McCutcheon, Greg Trooper, Mary Gauthier, Scott Miller, Nels Andrews, Patty Griffin, Gillian Welch, Nathan Hamilton, John Hiatt, Jason Ringenberg, Guy Clark, Darrell Scott en Sam Baker. Bekende Nederlandse vertegenwoordigers van het genre zijn at the close of every day, El Pino and the Volunteers, Ongenode Gaste, Powderblue, Sickboys and Lowmen, Woody & Paul, Specs Hildebrand, White Sands en Taneytown. Er is ook een Nederlandse website waar je kunt zoeken naar Americana optredens in Nederland en België: Americana Live Music Americana is ook de titel van een album van The Offspring.
- Americana – gatunek muzyczny wywodzący się ze Stanów Zjednoczonych, łączący w sobie elementy tradycyjnych, amerykańskich oraz współczesnych gatunków muzycznych takich jak folk, country, rhythm & blues, rock & roll i innych, określana jest czasami także jako "alt-country" czy "alt. country" czy też w bardziej opisowy sposób jako "progresywne country", a także nieco złośliwie jako "cowpunk" czy "y'allternative". Według The Americana Music Association americana to "muzyka, która czci oraz pochodzi z tradycji muzycznych korzeni Ameryki i jest inspirowana tradycjami kultury amerykańskiej". Do artystów grających americanę zaliczają się takie osoby i grupy jak: Johnny Cash, Mavis Staples, The Band, Willie Nelson, Emmylou Harris, Elvis Presley, Loretta Lynn, Ryan Adams, Bob Dylan, Gram Parsons, Soloman Burke, Lucinda Williams, Lyle Lovett i wielu innych. W Polsce z nurtem utożsamia się zespół Grupa Furmana.
- Americana är en lös benämning för folkmusik och traditionell musik från USA, och kan sägas inkludera stilar som folkmusik, countryblues, bluegrass, alternativ country, rockabilly, rotrock och heartland. Under senare år kan följande artister sägas representera genren: Dave Alvin, The Band, Susan Cowsill, The Creekdippers, the Derailers, Bob Dylan, Steve Earle, Emmylou Harris, The Jayhawks, Jim Lauderdale, Will Oldham, Otis Johnson Band, Tom Russell, Michelle Shocked, Son Volt, Uncle Tupelo, Lucinda Williams, Victoria Williams, Kimmie Rhodes, Gillian Welch, Ryan Adams, Neil Young, Martin Zellar och inte minst Grateful Dead som genom sitt unika konglomerat av bluegrass, rock, jazz, mountainballads och andra genrer kan sägas vara ultimata under americanabegreppet.
