Zurzeit existieren 53 berufliche Sektionen als Unterorganisation. Sie ist nach US-amerikanischen Staaten bzw. kanadischen Provinzen untergliedert. Im Laufe der Jahre kam es aufgrund von Auseinandersetzungen immer wieder zur Gründung anderer Organisationen. Manchmal wird die American Psychological Association mit der American Psychiatric Association (dem Verband der US-amerikanischen Psychiater) verwechselt, die sich ebenfalls mit APA abkürzt. Als APA-Standard (engl. APA style) werden die von der American Psychological Association (APA) herausgegebenen Richtlinien zur Gestaltung wissenschaftlicher Texte bezeichnet. Der APA-Standard ist mittlerweile in der fünften Auflage verfügbar und wird in dem von der APA herausgegebenen Buch The Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association beschrieben. In den letzten Jahren hat die APA scharfe Kritik von innen erfahren: Rogers H. Wright und Nicolas Cummings, zwei langjährige APA Mitglieder haben 2005 "Destructive Trends in Mental Health: The Well-Intentioned Path to Harm" herausgegeben, das der APA unter anderem eine gesellschaftspolitisch ultra-liberale Agenda, politische Korrektheit statt wissenschaftlicher Offenheit und die Unterstützung von Pseudowissenschaft und umstrittenen und potentiell schädlichen Therapien wie Rebirthing und Recovered memory therapy vorwirft.

In de laatste jaren stond de APA bloot aan kritische geluiden. Rogers H. Wright en Nicolas Cummings, die al lang lid waren van de APA, brachten in 2005 het boek "Destructive Trends in Mental Health: The Well-Intentioned Path to Harm" uit, waarin zij stellen dat de APA politieke correctheid laten prevaleren boven wetenschappelijke argumentatie, en dat de APA pseudowetenschappen en potentieel schadelijke therapievormen zou ondersteunen.
