  • AmeriCares is a nonprofit international disaster relief organization that delivers medicine, medical supplies and aid to people in crisis. According to the United Nations, approximately 2 billion people worldwide have inadequate or no access to life-saving medicines. That is one-third of the world’s population. In addition to a shortage of medicines, health care professionals in poor countries struggle daily with a lack of basic supplies, such as gloves, syringes, gauze and bandages. That’s where AmeriCares come in. AmeriCares works with major pharmaceutical companies and other medical suppliers to receive product donations and solicits financial support from individuals and corporations to deliver the aid via airlift or ocean cargo. AmeriCares partners with local charitable organizations in countries around the world who distribute the medicines and medical supplies to the health and welfare professionals in the indigent locations. Currently, AmeriCares is working in partnership with local organizations in more than 85 countries worldwide. Here in the U.S. , AmeriCares partners with more than 100 health care clinics serving the uninsured and under-insured in over 30 states. Since its founding, AmeriCares has delivered more than $8 billion in aid to 137 countries. AmeriCares reaches out locally to Connecticut residents in need of healthcare with their AmeriCares Free Clinics program. In late 2008, AmeriCares India was launched in Mumbai, India to serve the needs of the region.
