Im Gegensatz zu anderen Inseln der Ryūkyū-Inseln gehören die Amami-Inseln nicht zur Präfektur Okinawa, sondern zur Präfektur Kagoshima, weshalb sie auch den Satsunan-Inseln zugerechnet werden. Der von den Bewohnern gesprochene Amami-Dialekt gehört zu den Ryūkyū-Sprachen. Zu den endemischen Arten der Inselgruppe gehören das Amami-Kaninchen (Pentalagus furnessi) und die Amami-Waldschnepfe (Scolopax mira).
