The neighbourhood is one of the oldest in the city with many of its buildings dating from the mid nineteenth century to the early twentieth century. The area is home to numerous historic mansions, including Bellevue House, which was the home of Canada's first Prime Minister Sir John Alexander Macdonald. The building is considered one of the finest examples of Italianate vila architecture in Canada. Today it is designated a National Historic Site of Canada. Another famous mansion in the area is Alwington House, built in 1832 as the official Governor General's residence while Kingston was the capital of Canada in 1841-1843. The neighbourhood is also home to St. Mary's of the Lake Hospital, a teaching hospital established in 1946. Along the shores of Lake Ontario at the south of Alwington is the J.K. Tett Centre, a community arts facility home to the Queen's Performing Arts Centre and the Domino Theatre.
