Alwin Mittasch (December 27. 1869–June 4. 1953) was a German chemist. He received his ph.D. at the university of Leipzig for work with Wilhelm Ostwald in 1901. He started working for BASF Ludwigshafen in 1904 as assistant of Carl Bosch. Mittasch discovered the efficient and cheap iron based catalyst for the ammonia synthesis in the Haber-Bosch process. During his time at BASF he published 14 books. Mittasch retired in 1933.
