- Alternative hip hop (also known as alternative rap) is a form of hip hop music that is defined in greatly varying ways. Allmusic defines it as follows: Alternative Rap refers to Hip-Hop groups that refuse to conform to any of the traditional stereotypes of rap, such as gangsta, bass, hardcore, and party rap. Instead, they blur genres - drawing equally from funk and pop/rock, as well as jazz, soul, reggae, and even folk.

Es zeichnet sich durch soziokulturell engagierte Lyrics und Musik aus sowie durch sparsame Beats, die oft wenige oder für Hip-Hop ungewöhnliche Instrumente samplen, oft verstärkt durch Live-Instrumente. Künstler des Alternative Hip-Hop waren generell kommerziell weniger erfolgreich als andere Größen des Hip-Hop, genießen aber oft höheres Ansehen bei Kritikern. Die Begründer des Genres waren dabei kommerziell erfolgreicher als spätere Innovatoren. Der Begriff Alternative Hip-Hop selbst wurde von Musikwissenschaftlern geprägt. Innerhalb der Szene selbst ist er nicht unumstritten, da Musik und Einstellung der Künstler wesentlich näher an den Ursprüngen des Hip-Hop liegen, als die späteren und kommerziell erfolgreicheren Entwicklungen wie beispielsweise der Gangsta Rap.
- Alternative hip-hop, ou hip-hop underground, est une opposition au hip-hop dit commercial qui est majoritairement diffusé sur les ondes radios et les chaines TV musicales. Mélange d'Abstract Hip-Hop et de sonorités empruntées au Jazz et à la musique noire en général, l'Alternative Hip Hop trouve un large écho en Europe et aux États-Unis. Ce hip-hop revient à l'essence même de cette musique, la rue. Passant outre le style bling-bling d'artistes comme 50 Cent ou P. Diddy, les représentants de ce courant cherchent à mettre la condition noire au centre de leur musique. - Alternativ hip hop (også kalt alternativ rap) er en vanskelig definert sjanger. Det er mange forskjellige store musikere som er alternativ rap/alternativ hip hop for eksempel Kanye West, Gym Class Heroes og Fort Minor. Det er mange forskjellige undersjangere til alternativ rap/alternativ hip hop som rock/pop, jazz, hip hop og funk. Alternativ rap/alternativ hip hop er ofte feiltolket som Hip hop.
- Hip Hop Alternativo (também chamado de Rap Alternativo ou Rap Underground) é um estilo do Rap que é o oposto do estilo Pop Rap, tentando mostrar as raízes dos problemas sociais, e não apenas como "coisa comercial", como definem a grande maioria dos rappers que fazem esse estilo, nem sempre criticando, mas querendo que o rap não vire "somente moda", e sim seja a solução para "abrir os olhos" das pessoas para a realidade. Os rappers brasileiros se destacam por aderirem a esse estilo (a grande maioria). Em Portugal também a uma forte influencia do Rap Alternativo pelos Mcs Valete, Bomberjack, Sam the Kid, Bonus, Adamastor, entre muitos ourtos. Apesar do que e dito os rappers alternativos não se importam de ser famosos ou conhecidos, desde que continuem a rimar por si e não porque a editora pede para fazer a música sobre um tema(normalmente festa). Bandas como Linkin Park foram fortemente influenciadas pelo Hip Hop Alternativo. - The most inventive, assured, and playful debut in hip-hop history, ''3 Feet High and Rising'' not only proved that rappers didn't have to talk about the streets to succeed, but also expanded the palette of sampling material with a kaleidoscope of sounds and references culled from pop, soul, disco, and even country music. Weaving clever wordplay and deft rhymes across two dozen tracks loosely organized around a game-show theme, De La Soul broke down boundaries all over the LP, moving easily from the groovy my-philosophy intro "The Magic Number" to an intelligent, caring inner-city vignette named "Ghetto Thang" to the freewheeling end-of-innocence tale "Jenifa Taught Me , playing fast and loose on the mic like Biz Markie. Thinly disguised under a layer of humor, their lyrical themes ranged from true love to the destructive power of drugs . Prince Paul and DJ Pasemaster Mase led the way on the production end, with dozens of samples from all sorts of left-field artists -- including Johnny Cash, the Mad Lads, Steely Dan, Public Enemy, Hall & Oates, and the Turtles. The pair didn't just use those samples as hooks or drumbreaks -- like most hip-hop producers had in the past -- but as split-second fills and in-jokes that made some tracks sound more like DJ records. Even "Potholes on My Lawn," which samples a mouth harp and yodeling (for the chorus, no less), became a big R&B hit. If it was easy to believe the revolution was here from listening to the rapping and production on Public Enemy's ''It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back'', with De La Soul the Daisy Age seemed to promise a new era of positivity in hip-hop.
