Cette station est particulierement reputee pour ses hors pistes et pour la qualite de sa neige qui tombe en tres grand quantite (plus de 17m de chute de neige cumule pour la saison 2007-2008). Alta est l'une des plus ancienne station de ski americaine. Elle ouvrit son premier remonte pente en 1939. Une des particularite d'Alta est d'etre totalement interdite au surf des neiges. Seul les skieurs peuvent y penetrer. Aucun systeme de securite n'equipe les telesieges de la station et les pentes deservies sont particulierement raide. Cela en fait une station tres selective, reservee aux bons skieurs.
