A large disc of dust and material has been shown to exist around Alphecca, prompting speculation of a similar planetary/proto-planetary system to that currently assumed around Vega. How the binary-star dynamic would affect such a system is the subject of intense debate. The name Alphecca is Arabic, short for نير الفكّة nayyir al-fakka "the bright (star) of the broken (ring of stars)". Gemma is Latin for "jewel". Gnosia is also Latin, short for Gnōsia stella corōnæ "star of the crown of Knossos". Asteroth is Hebrew, עשתרות ‘ašterôt "Astarte (idols)". As the brightest star in Corona Borealis, it lent its name to the brightest in Corona Australis, Alphekka Meridiana. In astrology it is one of the Behenian fixed stars and has the symbol .

Nach neuesten Forschungen lässt sich der Durchmesser von Alpha Coronae Borealis auf das 2,8-fache das der Sonne berechnen.

La separación media entre ambas es de 0,20 UA. La estrella blanca presenta un disco de acrecimiento alrededor, como otras estrellas blancas similares, lo que plantea la posible existencia de un sistema protoplanetario. Cómo puede afectar Alphecca B a este sistema es objeto de intenso debate. También hay que señalar que Alphecca forma parte de la llamada corriente de la Asociación estelar de la Osa Mayor, conjunto de estrellas que se piensa que tienen un origen común, y se mueven de la misma forma por el espacio.
