- Alma Redemptoris Mater or, in English, "Loving Mother of our Savior," is one of four liturgical Marian antiphons, and sung at the end of the office of Compline. Hermannus Contractus (Herman the Cripple) (1013 - 1054) is said to have authored the hymn based on the writings of Ss. Fulgentius, Epiphanius, and Irenaeus of Lyon. It is mentioned in "The Prioress' Tale", one of Geoffrey Chaucer's Canterbury Tales. - Alma redemptoris mater (Erhabene Mutter des Erlösers) ist die marianische Antiphon, die im Stundengebet der Katholischen Kirche in der Advents- und Weihnachtszeit entweder nach der Vesper oder nach der Komplet gesungen wird - je nachdem, welche dieser beiden Horen die letzte ist, die in Gemeinschaft gefeiert wird. Benannt ist die Antiphon nach den ersten drei Worten des lateinischen Textes, der vor 1054 von Hermann von Reichenau, einem Benediktiner der Abtei Reichenau, geschrieben wurde. Der Text lautet:

Za jejího autora je pokládán středověký básník Heřman z Reichenau. Modlitba, oslavující v básnických obrazech Pannu Marii, je psána v pravidelných časoměrných hexametrech, což je ve středověké poesii poměrně neobvyklé. Její latinský text zní: Alma Redemptoris Mater, quae pervia caeli porta manes, et stella maris, succurre cadenti surgere qui curat, populo: tu quae genuisti, natura mirante, tuum sanctum genitorem, Virgo prius ac posterius, Gabrielis ab ore sumens illud Ave, peccatorum miserere. Oficiální liturgický překlad do češtiny zní takto: Slavná Matko Spasitele, bráno nebes, hvězdo mořská, na pomoc přijd svému lidu, který touží povstat z hříchu. Přijalas zvěst Gabriela, porodilas svého Tvůrce, pannou jsi být nepřestala - celý vesmír nad tím žasne. Smiluj se nad hříšným světem. Modlitba byla mnohokrát zhudebněna a je využívána při celé řadě liturgických příležitostí. V římskokatolickém breviáři je uvedena jako jedna z antifon, které je možné zpívat nebo recitovat na závěr completoria (kompletáře - poslední modlitby dne), stejně jako Salve Regina.
- Alma Redemptoris Mater est une prière catholique dédiée à la Vierge Marie. Elle est une des quatre antiennes mariales et elle est ordinairement chantée pendant la nuit. Son titre signifie Sainte Mère du Rédempteur en latin. Dans le calendrier liturgique, elle est surtout priée pendant le temps de Noël et le temps de l'Avent jusqu'à la fête de la Purification de la Vierge Marie, mais elle peut être récitée à volonté avec la liturgie des heures. Herman de Reichenau l'aurait composée au XI siècle. Pour les chrétiens, Marie est la mère de Jésus, qui est le Rédempteur des êtres humains. La prière nomme Marie comme étant l'«étoile de la mer»; ceci est une des étymologies de son prénom. Elle mentionne aussi la miséricorde de Marie, sa virginité perpétuelle et sa place en tant que défenseur du peuple chrétien. Dans ses écrits, Geoffrey Chaucer fait mention de cette prière. Le pape Jean-Paul II a écrit une encyclique intitulée Redemptoris Mater en 1987.

Viene tradizionalmente recitata dopo la Compieta nel tempo di Natale, quindi come conclusione dell'ultima Ora della giornata. L'inno fu scritto da Ermanno di Reichenau nell'XI secolo. Il Papa Giovanni Paolo II nel 1987 ha dedicato una enciclica a Maria titolandola Redemptoris Mater.
