- Allochtoon is a Dutch word (derived from Greek ἀλλος, other, and χθον earth/land), literally meaning "originating from another country". It is the opposite of the word autochtoon (in English, "autochthonous" or "autochthone"; derived from Greek αυτο, self) literally meaning "originating from this country". In the Netherlands (and Flanders), the term "allochtoon" is widely used to refer to immigrants and their descendants. Officially the term allochtoon is much more specific and refers to anyone of whom one or both of his/her parents was not born in the Netherlands. Hence, third generation immigrants, are no longer considered allochtoon (if both their parents were born in the Netherlands), though this does not automatically make them ethnically Dutch. The corresponding antonym autochtoon is less widely used, but it roughly corresponds to ethnic Dutch. Among a number of immigrant groups living in the Netherlands, a "Dutch" person (though they are themselves Dutch citizens) usually refers to the ethnic Dutch. In 1950, Dutch descent, Dutch nationality, and Dutch citizenship were in practice identical. The Netherlands was largely a mono-ethnic society with some colonial influences (if the Frisians are considered part of the Dutch ethnic group). In 1950, most Dutch were either Catholic or Protestant, with some atheists. Decolonisation and immigration from the 1960s on, altered the ethnic and religious composition of the country - there are now about one million Muslims. This development has made the 'ethnicity' and national identity of the Dutch a political issue. Dutch nationality law is based primarily on the principle of Jus sanguinis ("Right of blood"). In other words, citizenship is conferred primarily by birth to a Dutch parent, irrespective of place of birth.
- Als allochthon (griechisch ἄλλος und χϑών bezeichnet man in den Sozialwissenschaften Menschen fremder Herkunft oder Abstammung. Da die Begriffe „Einwanderer“ und „Ausländer“ teilweise nicht treffend sind für Menschen fremder Herkunft oder Abstammung, bzw. diese Begriffe manchmal als diskriminierend empfunden werden, wird auch im Deutschen gelegentlich das Wort „allochthon“ verwendet. Dies ist wahrscheinlich eine Übernahme aus dem Niederländischen, wo jemand dann als allochthon bezeichnet wird, wenn er selbst oder mindestens ein Elternteil im Ausland geboren wurde. Der Gegenbegriff zu „allochthon“ ist „autochthon“. Während der Begriff "autochthon" solche Minderheiten bezeichnet, die auf Grund endogener politisch-historischer Prozesse entstanden sind, meint der Begriff von "allochthonen Minderheiten" jene, die exogen auf Grund von Wanderungen, Vertreibung oder Arbeitsmigration entstanden sind.

À l'opposé du concept d'allochtone, on trouve celui d'autochtone, littéralement terre d'ici. Le terme allochtone est utilisé aux Pays-Bas (allochtoon) et en Belgique (au départ en néerlandais, mais de plus en plus également en français) pour désigner des personnes ou des groupes de personnes d'origine étrangère, il peut recouvrir différentes définitions, y compris légales. En géologie, allochtone qualifie des terrains qui ont été charriés et qui en recouvrent d'autres pouvant être plus récents, dits autochtones. En écologie, le qualificatif allochtone est utilisé pour désigner des espèces d'origine étrangère au biome local. Il s'agit le plus souvent d'organismes introduits par l'homme, soit volontairement, dans une perspective économique ou esthétique, soit accidentellement.

Met betrekking tot het woord allochtoon zijn er, wanneer het om bevolkingsgroepen gaat, verschillende definities in omloop. Het begrip werd in 1971 geïntroduceerd door de sociologe Hilda Verwey-Jonker in een rapport voor het Nederlandse ministerie van Cultuur, Recreatie en Maatschappelijk Werk, ter vervanging van het tot dan toe gangbare woord immigrant. Feitelijk was het bedoeld als eufemisme. De termen 'allochtoon' en 'autochtoon' bestaan overigens al veel langer in het Nederlands, voor 1954 werden ze gespeld als 'allochthoon' en 'autochthoon'. Ook in de biologie en geologie worden ze gebruikt om in- of uitheemse planten, dieren of verschijnselen mee te duiden. Nog in de jaren zeventig kon bijvoorbeeld een persoon uit Den Bosch die enkele kilometers verderop naar Sint-Michielsgestel verhuisde daar als allochtoon gezien worden. Inmiddels heeft het woord 'allochtoon' ook een pejoratieve lading. In 2006 werd er zelfs een voorstel werd gedaan door de fractie van de PvdA in de Amsterdamse gemeenteraad, om het gebruik van de term 'allochtoon' in officiële stukken te verbieden. Bij gebrek aan een alternatief bleek dit niet haalbaar. Dit woord is dus een voorbeeld van een eufemismetredmolen. In februari 2008 suggereerde minister van justitie Ernst Hirsch Ballin ook maar weer eens dat de term allochtoon afgeschaft moest worden, maar kreeg direct veel kritiek over zich heen, vanwege het immers reeds lang bekende tredmoleneffect. In het Vlaams Decreet Etnisch-culturele minderheden van 1998 staan de allochtonen vermeld als een van de doelgroepen, naast de vluchtelingen en de nieuwkomers. In dat decreet staan de allochtonen tegenover de nieuwkomers: ze verblijven reeds langere tijd (op een legale wijze) in Vlaanderen. In Vlaanderen wordt sinds ongeveer 2000 ook de term nieuwe Vlaming gebruikt, mede op vraag van de organisaties van nieuwe Vlamingen die de termen 'allochtoon' en '(im)migrant' nodeloos onderscheidend vinden voor algemeen taalgebruik.
