In her own words, Wylie describes her interests in the following: Wylie earned an MA in archaeology and PhD in Philosophy from SUNY Binghamton with a dissertation directed by Rom Harre. Before moving to the University of Washington she taught at Washington University in St. Louis, and in the women's studies department at Barnard College and the department of philosophy at Columbia University.
