- Alexandre Clement Leon Joseph Luigini was a French composer and conductor. Luigini was born in Lyon, France. His grandparents had moved there from Modena, Italy, when his grandfather took up the post of trumpeter with the orchestra of the Grand-Theatre. Alexandre Luigini was brought up with music, his father also playing with, and later conducting, the orchestra of the Grand-Theatre. After studying at the Conservatoire in Paris, Alexandre returned to Lyon and spent a great deal of time playing as a violinist in the theatre orchestra, which he went on to lead, becoming conductor in 1877. As resident conductor he was also expected to meet the compositional demands of the theatre, leading to a number of ballets, operas and orchestral suites. In 1897 he left Lyon to take up the conductorship of the Opéra-Comique in Paris, and led a busy life until his sudden death in 1906. At the Opéra-Comique he notably conducted the world premiere of Jules Massenet's Cendrillon on 24 May 1899. His compositions reflect his stage-orchestra background, being mostly light music for ballet and theater productions (including two operas). He also composed a number of songs and works for string quartet and other chamber groups. Luigini's Ballet Egyptien (1875) is his best known work, gaining great popularity in the early 20th century as a concert suite. It originally gained prominence when it was included in the second act of Verdi's Aida for a performance in Lyon in 1886.

Luiginis Großeltern stammen aus Modena, gingen aber nach Frankreich, als sein Großvater ein Anstellung als Trompeter am Grand-Théâtre in Lyon erhielt. Luiginis Vater war ebenfalls Musiker im Orchester, wurde später aber Dirigent des Orchesters des Grand-Théâtre. In dieser Tätigkeit komponierte er u.a. Ballette und Kantaten. Nach einem Studium am Conservatoire in Paris, wo er als 2. Preisträger aus einem Violinwettbewerb hervorging, kehrte Alexandre Luigini nach Lyon zurück und war zunächst mehrere Jahre im Theaterorchester als Violinist tätig. 1877 wurde er Dirigent dieses Orchesters. In dieser Funktion hatte er auch für das Theater zu komponieren. Dies führte zur Komposition überwiegend von Ballettmusik, aber auch Opern und Orchestersuiten. 1897 verließ er Lyon und wurde Dirigent an der Opéra comique in Paris, wo er bis zu seinem plötzlichen Tod im Jahre 1906 lebte. Seine Kompositionen sind überwiegend aus der Theaterpraxis heraus entstanden. Er schrieb überwiegend Gebrauchsmusik für das Ballett und für diverse Theaterproduktionen, darunter zwei Opern. Daneben entstand eine Reihe von Liedern sowie Werke für Streichquartett und andere Kammermusikformationen. Luiginis bekanntestes Werk ist das Ballet Égyptien (1875), welches in den frühen 1920er Jahren große Bekanntheit als Orchestersuite erlangte. Luigini komponierte die Musik ursprünglich für den zweiten Akt zu Giuseppe Verdis Aida, als diese 1886 in Lyon zur Aufführung kam. Besondere Popularität erlangte diese Ballett-Musik in ihrer Verwendung beim pseudo-ägyptischen „sand-dance“ des britischen Unterhaltungs-Trios Jack Wilson, Joe Keppel und Betty Knox, die damit von den 20er bis in die 50er Jahre des 20. Jahrhunderts auftraten.

Nel 1897 partì da Lione per assumere la direzione dell'Opéra-Comique di Parigi, dove fu impegnato sino alla sua morte, avvenuta improvvisamente nel 1906. Le sue composizioni riflettono la sua formazione orchestrale: si tratta infatti per lo più di musiche per balletto e di produzioni teatrali (fra queste rientrano due opéra comique, intitolate Les caprices de Margot e La reine des fleurs e l'operetta Faublas). Ha composto anche numerose canzoni, marce, la cantata Gloria victis e musiche per quartetto d'archi e altri organici di musica da camera. Il lavoro più conosciuto di Alexandre Luigini è il Ballet égyptien, op. 12: la suite che ne è stata tratta apriva il secondo atto dell'Aida di Verdi per la rappresentazione di quest'opera a Lione nel 1886, e ha ottenuto grande popolarità all'inizio del XX secolo. Il Ballet égyptien fu anche uno dei balletti più a lungo eseguiti da Anna Pavlova. Fra le altre composizioni di Luigini di ispirazione esotica si possono ancora ricordare il Ballet russe, op. 23 e il Carnival turc, op. 51.
- アレクサンドル(・クレマン・レオン・ジョゼフ）・ルイジーニ（またはリュイジニー）（Alexandre Clement Leon Joseph Luigini, 1850年3月9日 - 1906年7月29日）はフランスの舞台音楽の作曲家、ヴァイオリニスト。リヨン出身。父方の祖父母はモデナ出身のイタリア人で、祖父は同地の歌劇場のオーケストラでトランペット奏者を務めており、父親はその指揮者であった。 音楽的環境の中で成長し、パリ音楽院に学んだ後リヨンに帰郷。劇場オーケストラのヴァイオリン奏者として過ごし、後に指揮者や楽長を務めるようになった。常任指揮者として、劇場の需要に応じた楽曲の提供が期待されていたため、バレエ音楽や歌劇、管弦楽組曲を作り出すようになった。1897年にリヨンを去って、パリのオペラ＝コミック座の指揮者に着任、1906年に急死するまで多忙な日々を送った。 ルイジーニの作品は、劇場オーケストラという自らの背景を反映して、ほとんどがバレエや演劇むけの軽い音楽となっている。オペラは2曲ある。たくさんの歌曲や、いくつかの室内楽曲も手懸けた（弦楽四重奏曲1曲を含む）。 バレエ音楽《エジプトの踊り Ballet Egyptien 》（1875年）は、ルイジーニの最も有名な作品であり、20世紀初頭においては管弦楽組曲版が人気であった。ヴェルディの《アイーダ》のリヨン初演（1886年）の際に、第2幕に挿入されたことがきっかけとなり、有名になった。
