- Alexander Motylev is an International Grandmaster of chess and a former champion of Russia. He learnt how to play at the age of four and a half years and aged six, took part in group instruction sessions. This is not uncommon in Russia where chess is very much part of the school curriculum. His progress remained good and by the time he was eleven, Motylev was already a Candidate Master (a title previously achieved by his father). Around this time, he was also gifted at football, a sport for which he had major aspirations. Made aware of his split loyalties by his chess coach, Motylev's physical education teacher advised him to concentrate on chess and this proved to be good advice, as he went on to become national junior champion at both under 16 and under 18 level. In 2001, he shocked the chess world with a surprise win of the Russian Championship, but in the years that followed, his indifferent form lead to both good and bad results. In 2002, he was invited to take part in the prestigious Russia vs Rest of the World match in Moscow and in the company of the world's elite players, scored only 1/6. In 2003, he won the Corsican Open at Bastia. In 2004, he swept to a comfortable victory at the Tomsk qualifier and then performed well in the Russian Superfinal. In the latter contest, a fighting draw with Kasparov saw him finish strongly, level with leading grandmasters Svidler, Morozevich and Bareev. In 2005, he finished second at the 2nd Sanjin Hotel Cup (after Harikrishna, who he defeated) and in the same year, qualified again for the Russian Superfinal, this time by taking 3rd place at Kazan. In 2006, he was the joint winner of the Corus "B" Tournament at Wijk aan Zee with Magnus Carlsen. In June 2009 he won 10th Poikovsky Karpov tournament (category 18, 2694) in Poikovsky, Russia. In regular team events, he played for Russia in the 2001 World Team Championships and contributed a 2/3 performance, helping the team to a silver medal. At the European Team Championship of 2005, his own sub-50% score and the whole team effort was far less convincing, as the Russians crashed to a surprising 14th place finish.

Motyliov jugó para el equipo de Rusia en el 2001, en los Campeonatos Mundiales y contribuyó con su sólido rendimiento 2 puntos en 3 partidas, ayudando el equipo a conseguir la medalla de plata. En el pasado Torneo Corus de ajedrez de 2007, celebrado en Holanda, quedó clasificado el 10º, logrando 5,0 puntos de 13 posibles, con 10 tablas y 3 derrotas.

Vescovi Giovanni werd eerste. Van 2 t/m 11 september 2005 speelde Motylev mee in de semi-finale om het kampioenschap van Rusland dat in Kazan verspeeld werd en waar hij met 6.5 punt uit negen ronden op een gedeelde derde plaats eindigde. Van 31 oktober t/m 11 november 2005 speelde Svidler mee in het wereldteamkampioenschap schaken 2005 dat in Beër Sjeva verspeeld werd. Het Russische team werd met 22 punten kampioen. In januari 2006 wint Motylev de B-groep in het Corus-toernooi 2006, maar moet hij die plaats wel delen met Magnus Carlsen.

W roku 2001 osiągnął duży sukces, zwyciężając w Eliście w mistrzostwach kraju seniorów. W tym samym roku zdobył wraz z drużyną srebrny medal na drużynowych mistrzostwach świata w Erywaniu, uzyskał najlepszy indywidualny wynik w meczu Rosja - Chiny oraz wystąpił w Moskwie na mistrzostwach świata rozegranych systemem pucharowym, awansując do III rundy, w której przegrał z Aleksiejem Szyrowem. Rok później wystąpił w narodowej drużynie w meczu Rosja - Reszta świata. W 2003 zwyciężył w silnie obsadzonym otwartym turnieju Corsican Open w Bastii. W 2004 podzielił III m. w otwartym turnieju w Hoogeveen oraz wystąpił na mistrzostwach świata w Trypolisie (gdzie w I rundzie przegrał z Hichamem Hamdouchim). W 2005 podzielił I m. w turnieju Aerofłot Open w Moskwie oraz zajął II m. w turnieju Sanjin Hotel Cup w Taiyuan. W 2006 zwyciężył w turnieju Corus B w Wijk aan Zee. W 2008 r. podzielił II m. w kolejnym openie Aeroflot w Moskwie. W 2009 r. odniósł jeden z największych sukcesów w karierze, samodzielnie zwyciężając w turnieju XVIII kat. FIDE w miejscowości Pojkowskij. Najwyższy ranking w swojej dotychczasowej karierze osiągnął 1 lipca 2009 r. , z wynikiem 2710 punktów zajmował wówczas 27. miejsce na światowej liście FIDE.
