- Alentejo is a south-central region of Portugal. Its name's origin, "Além-Tejo", literally translates to "Beyond the Tagus" or "Across the Tagus". The region is separated from the rest of Portugal by the Tagus river, and extends to the south where it borders the Algarve. Alentejo is a region known for its polyphonic singing groups, comparable to those found on Sardinia and Corsica. Its main cities are Évora (region's capital), Santarém (formerly belonging to Ribatejo region), Portalegre, Beja, and Sines. Being a traditional region, it is also one of the more recent seven Regions of Portugal. Today Lezíria do Tejo subregion, formerly belonging to Lisboa e Vale do Tejo region, is part of Alentejo NUTS II region.

És important remarcar que aquesta divisió no coincideix amb l'antiga regió tradicional de l'Alentejo (que no constituïa una província per si mateixa, encara que hom s'hi refereixi moltes vegades com a unió de les dues províncies de l'Alt i el Baix Alentejo, la qual era lleugerament menor que l'actual: incloïa tan sols els districtes d'Évora i Beja, pràcticament tot el districte de Portalegre (excepte el consell de Ponte de Sor, que formava part del Ribatejo, i la meitat sud del de Setúbal (els consells d'aquest districte que formen part de l'actual regió de l'Alentejo Litoral, o sigui: Alcácer do Sal, Grândola, Santiago do Cacém i Sines. A més d'això, va formar part de l'antiga comarca de l'Alentejo el municipi d'Olivença, que llavors fou ocupat per Espanya.

Cette région est caractérisée par le mélange des cultures romaine et arabe ainsi que les témoignages plus récents du christianisme. Au nord–est se trouvent les villes et villages typiques de la Route des Châteaux : Nisa, Castelo de Vide, Marvao, Portalegre (renommée pour ses tapisseries) et Alter do Chao. En allant vers le sud, le paysage est plus aride. Alvito, Beja (ancienne cité romaine qui devint un centre culturel musulman), Olivença, Serpa et Mértola sont des lieux qui méritent une visite. Au sud-ouest, la bande côtière attire les visiteurs grâce à ses magnifiques plages dont certaines encore sauvages. L’Alentejo est une région réputée pour son tourisme rural et écologique.

- Alentejo is een zuid-centraal gebied in Portugal. De oorsprong van de naam, "além do Tejo", betekent letterlijk "over de Taag". In het zuiden bij Mértola is een ander natuurgebied dat Parque Natural do Vale Guadiana heet. Dit is merendeels onbewoond en is het tegenovergestelde van het eerste. In het westen is de kuststrook die van de haven van Sines tot Kaap van São Vicente loopt ook een beschermd gebied. De Alqueva dam is tegenwoordig een bekend punt in het gebied.
