- Alcantara is the name given to a composite material used to cover surfaces and forms in a variety of situations and applications. The material was developed in the 1970s by Miyoshi Okamoto, a scientist working for the Japanese chemical company Toray. In 1972, a joint venture between Italian chemical company ENI and Toray formed Alcantara SpA in order to manufacture and distribute the material. Alcantara is created via the combination of an advanced spinning process (producing very low denier bi-component "islands in the sea" fibre) and chemical and textile production processes (needle punching, buffing, impregnation, extraction, finishing, dyeing, etc. ) which interact with each other.
- Alcantara ist der Name eines in Japan entwickelten und in Italien in Lizenz hergestellten auf Polyester und Polystyrol basierenden Mikrofaserstoffs. In Japan wird Alcantara auch Ecsaine genannt, in den USA kennt man es als Ultrasuede. Alcantara wird manchmal fälschlicherweise als Leder oder Kunstleder bezeichnet. Durch Extrusion der beiden miteinander vermischten Grundkomponenten entsteht ein extrem dünner Faden, aus dem sich besonders weiche und anschmiegsame Stoffe weben lassen, die in ihrer Oberflächenbeschaffenheit an Veloursleder erinnern. Alcantara kommt in den verschiedensten Bereichen der Textilverarbeitung als Vliesstoff zum Einsatz, so zum Beispiel für Bekleidung und als Gebrauchstextilie (Dekostoff oder im Innenbereich von Autos als Sitzbezug oder Verkleidung). Alcantara ist preislich vergleichbar mit hochwertigem Autoleder, der Vorteil liegt im geringen Verschnitt, denn Alcantara wird als Meterware verkauft mit 142 cm Breite (früher 128 cm Breite). In Autos werden damit Sitze, Verkleidungen, Säulen, Türverkleidungen und Himmel bezogen.

L'alcantara est une fibre synthétique conçue par la société italienne Alcantara à base de polyester et de polyuréthane, respectivement à hauteur de 60 et 40%. Classé parmi les tissus non-tissés, l'alcantara est fabriqué par l'alignement en nappe de fibres de polyester très fines, liées entre elles par l'apposition à chaud d'une résine de polyuréthane.

Il nome deriva dalla parola araba che significa "ponte", ed è un marchio registrato di proprietà dell'omonima ditta Alcantara S.p.A. , che lo produce nello stabilimento di Nera Montoro e lo commercializza. Non ha trama e ordito come i tessuti, ma è invece un materiale composito. È ottenuto da una particolare combinazione di un processo di filatura, fibra bicomponente a bassissima denaratura del tipo mare-isola, e di processi di produzione tessili e chimici come agugliatura, smerigliatura, impregnazione, estrazione, finissaggio, tintura, ecc; con l'intento di ottenere migliori doti di morbidezza, lavabilità e facilità di confezionamento rispetto ai tessuti ed alle pelli. L'Alcantara è spesso utilizzato in arredamento per divani e cuscini, nell'abbigliamento per giacche e abiti in pelletteria per borse e valige ed in tappezzeria per gli interni delle auto, rivestimenti e fodere, così come diversi sono i settori in cui è utilizzato: automotive, interior design e decoration, yachting, moda e accessori, high tech.
