- Alcalde, or Alcalde ordinario, is the traditional Spanish municipal magistrate, who had both judicial and administrative functions. An alcalde was, in the absence of a corregidor, the presiding officer of the Castilian cabildo (the municipal council) and judge of first instance of a town. Alcaldes were elected annually, without the right to reelection for two or three years, by the regidores (council members) of the municipal council. The office of the alcalde was signified by a staff of office, which they were to take with them when doing their business.
- Alcalde ist die spanische Amtsbezeichnung eines Bürgermeisters einer Stadt. Gemeindevorsteher sonstiger Ortschaften werden in Spanien Alcalde pedáneo genannt. Im deutschen Sprachgebrauch wird der Titel in deutscher und spanischer Schreibweise vor allem in Opern und Filmen als Nicht-Übersetzung aus dem Spanischen verwendet, beispielsweise in Die Macht des Schicksals von Verdi. In ehemaligen spanischen Kolonien Lateinamerikas wird der lokale Oberste Richter auch heute noch "Alcalde Mayor" genannt; so z. B. in Venezuela oder in Panama. Ebenso wie „Richter“ im Deutschen als Nachname vorkommt, kommt „Alcalde“ in Spanisch sprechenden Ländern als Hausname vor.
- O alcaide (do árabe قاضى, transliterado al-qā'di, «o líder») designava, nos tempos da reconquista cristã, em Portugal, o magistrado, de origem nobre, nomeado pelo rei, que desempenhava funções militares numa cidade ou vila sede de município, residindo como tal no castelo da mesma. Procurava desta forma o monarca recompensar nobres ou, pelo contrário, mantê-los satisfeitos e evitar contestações à ordem política, através da concessão desta magistratura e respectivos rendimentos. Com o decorrer do tempo, findas as guerras com os muçulmanos, perdeu o seu carácter bélico e tornou-se gradualmente um mero magistrado judicial; aplicava as justiças em nome do rei e era o sumo garante do cumprimento da lex. Porém, desde cedo os procuradores dos municípios às Cortes se queixaram ao monarca dos abusos cometidos pelos alcaides, tendo o rei então nomeado um outro alcaide, designado por alcaide-menor ou alcaide pequeno, entre os homens-bons (vizinhos) do concelho, para vigiar a actividade do alcaide, entretanto redesignado alcaide-maior ou alcaide-mor. Ao longo dos séculos, diversas reformas foram esvaziando de poderes esta magistratura, tornado-a meramente honorífica.
- Алка́льд — голова (президент) айунтамйєнто (міської управи), міський голова у іспаномовних країнах — Іспанії, Аргентині, Мексиці, Венесуелі, на Кубі та інших країнах Латинської Америки. У коло обов'язків і функцій алкальда зазвичай входили, як юридичні, так і адміністративно-управлінські. Походження терміну пов'язують з андалузьким арабським поняттям каді або кадій, що означає «суддя», яке було запозичено іспанцями за Середньовіччя, причому як слово, так і саме поняття. У сучасній Іспанії та інших іспаномовних державах «алкальд» — це те саме, що й «міський голова» або «мер».
