Albert Samuel Gatschet was an ethnologist. Born in Switzerland, he trained as a linguist in universities of Bern and Berlin. After his arrival in the United States, he was a pioneer in the study of Native American Languages. In 1877 he became an ethnologist of the US Geological Survey. In 1879 he became a member of the Bureau of American Ethnology. Gatschet published his observations of the Karankawa people of Texas. His study of the Klamath, published in 1890 is recognized as outstanding.

Er war danach in Bern Redaktor bei verschiedenen wissenschaftlichen und literarischen Zeitschriften. 1868 wanderte er in die USA aus, ließ sich in New York City nieder und wurde seit 1874 zu einem Pionier bei der Erforschung der indigenen Sprachen Nordamerikas. 1877 wurde er Ethnologe bei der staatlichen Geologie-Behörde und 1879 Mitglied des Bureau of American Ethnology der Smithsonian Institution. 1892 erhielt er den Ehrendoktortitel der Universität Bern.
